Trading Academy · Module 3 — Market fundamentals · Lesson 1/6
The same coin trades as three different things: the coin itself, a contract with an expiry date, and a contract that never expires. They show nearly the same price and carry completely different risks — and most crypto trading happens in the third one.
Buy spot and you own the coin. It can sit on the exchange or move to your own wallet; nothing about it expires, nothing can be liquidated, and the worst case is the price going to zero. Buy a future and you own no coin at all — only a contract whose value tracks the price. Traditional futures carry an expiry date: on that day the contract settles, which is the mechanism that forces its price and the real price back together. Crypto's signature instrument, the perpetual (perp), is a future with the expiry deleted — it can be held forever, and a balancing payment called funding does the job the expiry date used to do.
| Spot | Dated future | Perpetual | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You hold | the coin itself | a contract | a contract |
| Expiry | none | fixed date | none — ever |
| Kept near the real price by | it is the real price | settlement at expiry | funding payments |
| Leverage / shorting | no | yes | yes |
| Liquidation possible | no | yes | yes |
Why does the distinction matter to a beginner? Because every mechanic the rest of this module covers — margin, funding, open interest, liquidation cascades — exists only on the contract side of that table. Spot is slow and survivable by construction: no leverage, no liquidation, mistakes age gently. That is not an accident of taste — it is why our own signals are spot only: they are followable by someone still learning, with the whole failure class of this module removed.
The full lesson goes through what ownership versus exposure actually means, why perpetuals came to dominate crypto volume, what "USDT-M" and contract conventions mean when you first open a futures screen, which instrument suits which job — and a three-panel diagram of the tethers holding each price to reality.
