Trading Academy · Module 2 — Capital & risk management · Lesson 3/4
You bought five different alts, so you're diversified — right? On a red day, crypto disagrees. Five alt longs usually behave like one large bet on "crypto goes up", and your real position size is closer to the sum than the average.
Diversification works when assets move independently: one falls, another doesn't, the portfolio wobbles instead of lurching. Crypto in calm weather looks independent enough — coins have their own news, their own communities, their own charts. That appearance is what the red day takes away.
When Bitcoin drops hard, almost everything drops with it, and usually harder. The technical phrase is that correlations rise toward one in stress — the plain version is that on the day diversification would have paid you, it resigns. Whatever story each alt had on the way up, on the way down they share a single story: leveraged crypto positions being cut.
| What your book says | What your book is |
|---|---|
| 5 positions, different coins, 2% risk each | ≈ one position risking ~10% on "crypto up" |
| "diversified across ecosystems" | diversified across tickers, not across outcomes |
| 5 independent decisions | 1 decision, made 5 times |
Hypothetical book for illustration — the risk numbers are the fixed-fraction sizing from the previous lesson.
This is not an argument against holding several coins. It is an argument for honest accounting: size the group like the single bet it is. If your rule is "never risk more than 2% on one idea", five correlated alt longs are one idea.
The full lesson works through what actually happens to alt baskets on Bitcoin's worst days, how to group a watchlist into real bets (layer-1s together, memes together, almost everything with BTC), where genuine diversification in crypto does exist — including why our own momentum basket is built long-winners-minus-short-losers precisely so the shared "crypto up" bet cancels out — and ends with an exercise: grouping your own watchlist into the bets it truly contains.
